The Last Word |
In 2017 I took on the role of co-editor on The Last Word: an anthology of memories, which was published under Melbourne Polytechnic's publishing imprint Yarra Bend Press.
This job entailed seeking submissions through advertisement and social media call outs, which we then read, reviewed, and selected from which would be included in the collection. From the selected pieces, I worked as the substantive and copy editor or four - one short fiction piece, one creative essay, one novel excerpt, and one short memoir piece. A Letter Stained Red by Steven Cini
This short story uses dual narrative to show the heartfelt goodbye between a man, ‘Poppy’, and his dying mother. As Poppy tries to find the words to say goodbye to the mother he grew apart from, various flashbacks are triggered, showing the reader encounters between Poppy and his mother during his youth. |
Disintegration by Nicola Miller (a novella excerpt)
An unnamed teenage girl (Lola in the larger novel) details the events of a visit with her dying mother in the ICU. The piece mainly focuses on the relationship between Lola and her father, and how they are individually dealing with her mother sickness. The story has a strong focus on Australian imagery (Melbourne especially) and the minute details of the world surrounding her. The Nifoula by Mandi Kontos
The Nifoula is a tale about a tradition of road trips that take place in a white ’71 Holden Brougham that was the legacy that Mandi’s father left as he passed away. The Nifoula dives into a meditative ode to the open road and the shenanigans that can happen along the way when you add Greek tunes and a crazy family into a small confined space for an extended period of time. Why Tabletop Gaming? by Torben Jones
This creative essay discusses the joys of tabletop gaming, and the nostalgia it gives the author and his friends to days spent as children playing video games, before the ease of access to the Internet changed the way that people play those games together. |

During the production of The Last Word I also undertook a six month internship through Yarra Bend Press. I took on the role of Senior Editor for this period of time and worked overseeing each department involved in producing such a fantastic collection.
